Hi all,
From one of my students from Canada, a really good article about the rise of BLOGGING and text messaging over email. Please read and comment.

Hi, Catherine...interesting article, but I don't know if we should be looking to "young people" for the final word on what works in regards to communication. :) I agree with one respondent that different situations warrant different forms of communication. In matters that aren't time-sensitive, I much prefer shooting off a quick email and waiting for a reply then getting caught up in a 45 minute phone conversation. Similarly, it is often difficult to get work done online when someone wants to carry on text messaging. Just a couple of thoughts. Thanks for the article.

Catherine,
The article is so true. We still need email but it is becoming overwhelming when you have to sort through emails that include spam, announcements from work that go to global, and then the ones you really need to read. The WORLD is changing fast and the young adults are on the move and every second is spent communicating and it needs to be instant. They also have more than one form of communication going on at the same time. The baby boomers are just trying to keep up the best we can and doing a good at it is I say so myself.
Baby Boomer,
Kathleen

Hi Catherine,
While I also agree that different situations warrant different forms of communication - I am a bit of a dinosaur in that I use email for business, but hate it for socializing. As for text messages and IM - never if possible - I am an "in person" or telephone communicator. I want to at least hear the tone of voice of the person I am talking to. There is so much about technology that I love and there is so much that I just don't like. Technology gives us the ability to communicate with people in the most remote parts of the world and it makes the world so much smaller and yet somehow it also isolates and feeds our "bowling alone" society. How many times have you seen someone at the checkout counter with a real person in front of them and yet they never acknowledge that person, because they are busy talking to the other person on the cell phone. Okay - I will leave Jurrasic Park and get back to my email now.

Hi Catherine,

I finally read the article. It is a very good one. Nowadays, communication is very easy thanks to the development of technology. In fact, with email, text message, instant messenger, telephone, etc. we have various ways to communicate. That explains why a lot of young people are using these means to keep in touch with friends. However, I believe they need to avoid being addicted by them, which may have bad consequences on them. Even adults sometimes are addicted by technology and feel they cannot leave without them. An illustration of that is the problem that happened with Blackberry this week. A lot of people felt they could not do anything just because of that. Technology is good, but we have to be wise to exploit it in a good way and not let ourselves fall on the trap of addiction.

Hi Catherine,
As a mother of a 20 year old, who these days seems to have lost her vocal cords... I don't know what I would do without the email and text messaging. I think I would be an extremely anxious and insane parent. I remember my own adolescent years when I hardly communicated with my mother. Looking back I know that it was because I was isolating myself and very depressed. So for me as a mother it's very important to constantly communicate with my children. I am forever grateful to have any means of technology that will allow my children to be able to express what they are thinking and feeling, when words can’t be the option. Thanks for the article.
